There's new theatre in town

It was Friday (not the last one but the one before the last - I like being specific;-) and it was The Event.
The place is very well located - 4 tram stops from place where I live constantly - in a former cinema Kino Ochota building. I was there only once before, in times the cinema was still working (at least supposed to be working), but the lady in the box-office said to me that she couldn't sell me a ticket for the movie because I was the only person who came to see that movie. She gave me also a piece of a advice for the future: "Next time bring couple of your friends". Of course I (either by myself or with my friends) had never showed up again and when the cinema was announced as officially closed I thought for a minute that it might be partially my fault;-) Well, never mind. Closing the cinema caused opening the theatre and for me it's nothing wrong with that. The more so because the theatre (called Och-teatr) will most likely become one of the main stages in Warsaw.
That Friday there were concert of Marysia Peszek - charismatic, cheerful and liberated singer?, actress?, performer? - probably all of them in one person. I've seen her performing before (couple years ago) in her one-woman-show Miastomania (I'm even proud owner of her CD with songs coming from that show, which she magnanimously signed for me then). Friday's concert was mostly promoting her new CD and her new image as well and actually did that very well;-) Photos below coming from Rafał Nowakowski website.




It was really nice evening in good company - there were some really posh people. Among them this guy:

Alek

Po raz pierwszy zobaczyłem jej zdjęcie w 2003 roku, w "Wysokich obcasach", w artykule poświęconym temu, "co będzie modne tej wiosny". Pamiętam, że zdjęcie było dużym zbliżeniem twarzy i że "prześladowało" mnie jeszcze przez długi czas. Przedstawiało kobietę o niewyobrażalnie oryginalniej (dla mnie wówczas) urodzie, na którą składały się ciekawie osadzone, piękne oczy, masywny, ale idealnie współgrający z całą twarzą nos i oczywiście nasycony i połyskujący, ciemny kolor skóry. Wydarzenie to miało z całą pewnością znamiona zauroczenia a być może nawet zadurzenia. Od tamtej pory minęło kilka lat, przez które jak sądzę nieco dorosłem. Mimo to "stara miłość nie rdzewieje".
Aktualnie jestem świeżo po przeczytaniu autobiograficznej książki Alek Wek. Książka literackim dziełem nie jest (nikt zresztą tego się po niej nie spodziewał ani tym bardziej od niej tego nie oczekiwał), miejscami jest nawet napisana dość niedbale. Nie mniej jednak opisana w niej historia jest zdumiewająca i absolutnie wyjątkowa i choćby z tego powodu warto po nią sięgnąć. Nie zamierzam jej tu oczywiście streszczać, ale pokuszę się o przytoczenie pewnej ciekawostki. Otóż jednym z pierwszych castingów jakie wygrała Alek Wek był ten do teledysku Tiny Turner "Golden Eye" - pojawia się w nim przez kilka sekund zaraz na początku i pod koniec. Wbrew pozorom ten niebywały sukces i związane z nim możliwości w żaden sposób nie przełożyły się na dynamiczny rozwój jej kariery. Bardzo długo klasyfikowana jako egzotyczny typ urody dostawała angaż tylko w bardzo specyficznych projektach. Do mainstreamu trafiła dzięki temu, że kilku ludzi ze świata mody (o którym jest w książce też parę ciekawych zdań) postanowiło zaryzykować i umieścić jej zdjęcie na okładce amerykańskiego Elle. Było to dla mnie o tyle ciekawe, że nigdy nie podejrzewałbym akurat tego środowiska o tak silny konserwatyzm i związany z nim strach przed przełamaniem dominującego trendu nakazującego lansować białe modelki. Na szczęście się udało;-)



Książce zawdzięczam coś jeszcze. Dzięki podanemu w niej przepisowi na sałatkę z masłem orzechowym, mam w swoim repertuarze kucharskim jedną wyśmienitą i bardzo oryginalną przystawkę - oryginalną do tego stopnia, że robiąc ją po raz pierwszy (z minimalnej ilości składników, żeby w razie czego nie za dużo się zmarnowało) sam nie dowierzałem, że wyjdzie z tego coś jadalnego.
A na deser dobra kawa;-)

Lady McQueen concept

When we are thinking about music industry nowadays, music is probably one of these things which have a place at the end of the list what matters. There are so many other things involved which come to our minds before the music like for example all that "around promotion" stuff, money, people, people getting money from people giving money, who with whom by who announcements etc. And I'm not judging it, just stating the fact - that's the way it is and being aware of that is kinda necessary to exist in the industry. Among all these "before the music" things there are also video clips made generally to illustrate the music but practically to attract our attention in additional and probably more powerful way (especially in "not so good music" cases). It has to be said that the great video clips era has gone with the wind - of course there is still strong need to have video clip for the song and the quality of it is important but the concept not so much anymore - if you don't believe me switch on any of the popular TV music channels to see how similar one to each other they are. Fortunately someone has changed a little this annoying trend lately. Speaking of changing the trends in music industry (don't mix it up with changing the trends in music - they are perfectly fine and seem to be unchangeable;-) there is only one name at the moment - Lady Gaga. Her clips remind me the past era I've mentioned. Their quality is unquestionable but what is much more important the strong concept is there and thanks for that. Of course as always you can grumble about the idea but you should appreciate it anyway. I can even tell you that for me Lady Gaga's music doesn't exists without the clips - I've tried to have few of her songs on my iPod shuffle but it didn't work out actually;-) On the other hand whenever I see her video clip on TV screen I "shi shu" everybody around and watch with embarrassing pleasure. Maybe another reason which definitely works for me is that her clips give us rather rare opportunity to see some high fashion pieces apart from the runway and fashion shots. This is for sure the Bad romance video clip case. The clip is no doubt the great tribute to Alexander McQueen. Lady Gaga is wearing in it probably the most unwearable pair of high-heels in history and some other pieces from the latest designer's collection which unlikely might be seen at the streets (except the situation Lady Gaga will decide to wear them casually) - for more details look here.
What is also interesting concerning problems with having a concept, Alexander McQueen has always been that kind of designer who has the concept behind the fashion show - the latest one wasn't an exception - read here. Maybe that's why Lady Gaga decided to choose for the clip so many pieces from him only, considering the fact that she might ask whoever she wanted being contemporary style and fashion icon.
Good job anyway and I hope that the next video clip (which I'm looking forward to see) will be even more "conceptual" (sic!).

Don't want to promote Lady Gaga too much (she is so well promoted already) instead of one of her songs I'm enclosing the song being performed by another gay icon - Grace Jones;-) Enjoy!

tribute to Isabelle i nie tylko

Ekranizacja którejkolwiek z książek Elfriede Jelinek wydaje się zadaniem tak karkołomnym, że właściwie niewykonalnym - zresztą po co ekranizować coś, co funkcjonuje całkowicie na poziomie języka a nie obrazu. Zabrał się do tego Michael Haneke (chyba jedyny reżyser, który miał szanse jakoś się z tego zadania wywiązać) przy czym od razu wypada zaznaczyć, że
jego film Pianistka należy traktować jednak nie do końca jak ekranizację książki Jelinek, ale osobne dzieło, którym jest w istocie.
To, co książce daje język (czyli rytm, napięcie, skomplikowanie...), w filmie zawdzięczamy muzyce i aktorce Isabelle Huppert. W scenie egzaminu Waltera Klemmera, kiedy słuchając jego gry, patrzymy na twarz tytułowej bohaterki, pozornie nieruchomą a jednak wyrażającą wszystkie przeżywane w tym momencie przez nią emocje, jest to doskonale widoczne. Bez wątpienia to wybitna kreacja aktorki, doceniona zresztą przez krytyków, dzięki której ja sam zacząłem interesować się jej dokonaniami. A są one imponujące.
Gorąco polecam ten film osobom, które nie miały jeszcze okazji go obejrzeć, tym bardziej że nadarza się ku temu niepowtarzalna okazja:

Jak już jesteśmy przy nadarzających się okazjach to zdecydowanie warto wybrać się do Teatru Dramatycznego na spektakl Śmierć i dziewczyna oparty na tekstach dramatów Elfriede Jelinek - coś zupełnie wyjątkowego na warszawskiej scenie teatralnej.

Rozstania i powroty;-)

Phoebe Philo is coming back to the industry and yes – this is something to celebrate but actually there is something even more worth celebrating concerning the case. Let’s start from the beginning. There were times when Phoebe Philo was the designer for Chloe and it was good (you can look here for instance if you want to recall how good it was – fresh and sophisticated girlish look with very clean and clear statements). But then she decided to take a break (and the bad times came to the house but this is completely different story). Now she’s back after saying yes to the invitation from Celine and she is so capable of succeeding again but at so much higher level this time facing all the great expectations. And that’s the right reason for celebration, because what she’s already done for Celine gives us the certainty that her coming back was needed.

About the collections (Resort 2010 and Ready-to-wear for spring 2010).









First of all I admire the way she respects the house trying to establish new path for it. I think this is quite big challenge for someone like her (self-confident and being aware of her strength) to work that way (she tells something more about it here). Secondly there are surly less girlish looks - both collections are full of grown-up designs for grown-up people and that’s the new thing for her too. At the same time there are still great deal of similarities to what we remember as the Pheobe’s achievements during the Chloe period. Purity and clearness give the tone to the collections. In the latest collection we have mainly only four colours, in previous one there are some more but they all were used very rationally.
Additionally it seems to be very important for understanding Phoebe’s policy for the future how she plays with men’s wardrobe creating women’s clothes. She’s quite close in this field to her friend Stella McCartney I think and in both cases it really works.
Finally it has to be said that both collections for Celine (especially the latest one for spring 2010) are extremely wearable and it’s really great. Not only because of the economically tough days (actually I think that this is some kind of profit from this whole crisis that we’ve got lately so many reasonable (means wearable) collections) but simply because there is (and always was) really strong need by side of the customers to have real clothes (which can be worn daily) designed by top designers. And that’s why Phoebe Philo is hitting the nail right on the head. And we want more those hits. So crack on Phoebe.

For the dessert:


It’s hard to imagine that someone could wear this outfit better than Tilda – even the model hired to present it is so far away behind Tilda.

Ugg boots czyli buty Emu

My answer for these boots has always been 'NO' so far. Why? For some obvious reasons:
1) they deform legs in so many ugly ways,
2) they are extremely odd with no respect for the rules how the decent boot is supposed to look like,
3) they used to be so insanely popular, even common - people were wearing them with everything without any reflection,
4) they usually comes with boring colours
and I could go on.
All these cons among the pros and cons concerning the boots outshine few pros left. However there are some pros indeed:
1) these boots seem to be very comfy and easy to wear
2) they are probably extremely warm and at the same time very light
3) they look quite originally and definitely make the fashion statement
But let's refresh our minds.
Wearing these boots could be quite challenging and mainly because of that it could be also quite rewarding. It's so easy to say them 'NO'. But as I said here before (not once) the real fashion (which pushes things forward) is basically keeping taking a risk constantly. So for the first time in my life I actually encourage to try to wear them because something unexpected might happen.
Make them look acceptable or maybe even more then just acceptable and if you succeed it will be a real achievement.

IMPORTANT ADVICE: when you are going to wear Ugg boots, wear at least the best possible ones which are properly made - look here.

generally about patterns

We've already got to know that you can't go wrong mixing the colours which according to The Good Book are not the perfect match (read here). Now we're about to start thinking that you can't go wrong combining such patterns as well. Who is responsible for this crusade against The Good Book? Taking a look at two last Dries Van Noten's collections will give you the answer.
What is important concerning "the patterns case", there is still room for going wrong anyway so maybe throwing The Good Book away is not so wise thing to do. Like always in such cases it's all about the feeling. And the strength of Van Noten's collection comes exactly from there. You look at the mixes (in which the quality of every single pattern is exquisite by the way) and think: hey, it works, it really works, despite all expectations. But this is Van Noten - one of the best patterns' producers and combiners nowadays (as I said before).
Anyway, I think that for those (including me) who cannot afford these clothes and can only admire them at the photos and maybe in some videos, this collection provides a kind of encourage to try to change something in our styles by mixing different patterns and not being so worried about going wrong - I think it's always worth risking, because the final effect might happen to be breathtaking - just like in these pictures:

Za najbardziej bezkompromisowe wykorzystanie koronki w poprzednim sezonie jesienno/zimowym Miuccia zebrała wiele słów uznania. Koronka nigdy wcześniej nie funkcjonowała tak dobrze i na tak dużą skalę. Dla mnie ta kolekcja była manifestacją wielkiej pewności siebie i siły. A jeśli tak, to osobą stworzoną do noszenia tych ubrań jest nie kto inny jak Tilda Swinton.
